Ten iterative steps for model development and evaluation applied to Computational Fluid Dynamics for Environmental Fluid Mechanics

چکیده
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is increasingly used to study a wide variety of complex Environmental Fluid Mechanics (EFM) processes, such as water flow and turbulent mixing of contaminants in rivers and estuaries and wind flow and air pollution dispersion in urban areas. However, the accuracy and reliability of CFD modeling and the correct use of CFD results can easily be compromised. In 2006, Jakeman et al. set out ten iterative steps of good disciplined model practice to develop purposeful, credible models from data and a priori knowledge, in consort with end-users, with every stage open to critical review and revision (Jakeman et al., 2006). This paper discusses the application of the ten-steps approach to CFD for EFM in three parts. In the first part, the existing best practice guidelines for CFD applications in this area are reviewed and positioned in the ten-steps framework. The second and third part present a retrospective analysis of two case studies in the light of the ten-steps approach: (1) contaminant dispersion due to transverse turbulent mixing in a shallow water flow and (2) coupled urban wind flow and indoor natural ventilation of the Amsterdam ArenA football stadium. It is shown that the existing best practice guidelines for CFD mainly focus on the last steps in the ten-steps framework. The reasons for this focus are outlined and the value of the additional e preceding e steps is discussed. The retrospective analysis of the case studies indicates that the ten-steps approach is very well applicable to CFD for EFM and that it provides a comprehensive framework that encompasses and extends the existing best practice guidelines. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Numerical simulation of the fluid dynamics in a 3D spherical model of partially liquefied vitreous due to eye movements under planar interface conditions
Partially liquefied vitreous humor is a common physical and biochemical degenerative change in vitreous body which the liquid component gets separated from collagen fiber network and leads to form a region of liquefaction. The main objective of this research is to investigate how the oscillatory motions influence flow dynamics of partial vitreous liquefaction (PVL). So far computational fluid d...

متن کاملNonlinear Vibration Analysis of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Conveying Fluid in Slip Boundary Conditions Using Variational Iterative Method
In this paper, nonlinear dynamic behaviour of the carbon nanotube conveying fluid in slip boundary conditions is studied using the variation iteration method. The developed solutions are used to investigate the effects of various parameters on the nonlinear vibration of the nanotube. The results indicate that an increase in the slip parameter leads to a decrease in the frequency of vibration an...
متن کاملModified mathematical model for variable fill fluid coupling
Variable fill fluid couplings are used in the speed control units. Also, variation in coupling oil volume is used in adapting one size of coupling to a wider range of power transmission applications. Available model for the partially filled fluid couplings, has a good performance for couplings with fixed amount of oil but their performance will be degraded if they are used for the variable fill...
متن کاملExploration of the Significance of Autocatalytic Chemical Reaction and Cattaneo-Christov Heat Flux on the Dynamics of a Micropolar Fluid
During the homogeneous-heterogeneous autocatalytic chemical reaction in the dynamics of micropolar fluid, relaxation of heat transfer is inevitable; hence Cattaneo-Christov heat flux model is investigated in this report. In this study, radiative heat flux through an optically thick medium is treated as nonlinear due to the fact that thermal radiation at low heat energy is distinctly different f...
